5 | Jacob U’Mofe | Gordon | Bio-Summary of Dr. Jacob U’Mofe Gordon for Africans Outside Africa Project Jacob (Jake) Ukunoritsemofe Gordon, Sr. was born on October 25, 1939 in Okhaihe in Benin City area, in the country now known as Nigeria. He is the son of Prince Gordon Aja (Urhobo ethnicity) of Amukpe in Okpe Land and Princess Atiomatse Oyowe (Istekiri ethnicity) of Big Warri. He grew up with his three siblings (Florence, Emmanuel, and Hannah) in Sapele, now a city in the Delta State. Jake received his early education at Sapele Boys Academy, Yaba Higher College (now Yaba College of Technology) in Nigeria. In 1958 he was awarded the Emperor Haile Selassie Scholarship for African students to study at Addis Ababa University where he was elected as the representative/spokesperson for the Haile Selassie Scholars. During the first summer break he received an international internship at Swissair in Zurich, Switzerland and applied to study in the United States. In 1960 he was awarded a full scholarship to attend Bethune-Cookman College (now Bethune-Cookman University) in Florida, USA. It was from here that he embarked upon his “American Odyssey.” Jake graduated from Bethune-Cookman College with a B.A (Honors in History, 1962); earned an M.A (History, 1964) from Howard University; and a Ph.D. (History, 1967) from Michigan State University. He was awarded an Honorary LL.D degree in 1969 from The Union Baptist Seminary, Inc. Jake began his professional career in academia at Albany State College (now Albany State University) in Albany, Georgia as Chair of the Department of History and Political Science, 1967-1970; he served for 34 years (1970-2004) at the University of Kansas (KU) starting as the Founding Chair of the Department of African Studies (now Department of African and African American Studies). He established the Center for Multicultural Leadership to mentor non-traditional students. He significantly increased the number of KU graduates from Black, Latino, Native American backgrounds during a period when the state’s non-White population was less than 5%. With a grant from a Nigerian businessman-philanthropist he created the Marwa Africana Lecture Series. To help diversify the faculty at KU, he created the Langston Hughes Visiting Professorship to bring in accomplished scholars. He taught and mentored thousands of undergraduate students; and was chair or advisor for over 100 master’s and doctoral degree recipients. Dr. Gordon was the first Black Professor to be awarded the distinction of Professor Emeritus by the University of Kansas. Upon his retirement KU established the Jacob U. Gordon Collections in the University of Kansas Research Library and Archives. He became a Senior Fulbright Specialist in Ghana in 2012; and served as the 2nd Occupant of the Kwame Nkrumah Endowed Chair at the University of Ghana, 2013-2016. He continues in retirement as a mentor for undergraduate students in the Active Learning Program at the University of Florida. Jake is a recipient of several National and International Awards in Research, Teaching, Leadership, and Public Service. For more than a half-century in higher education, Professor Gordon has devoted his life to research, teaching, and public service to African and African Diaspora Studies. He is the author or co-author of more than 35 books, several monographs and numerous articles in academic journals. Dr. Gordon has traveled extensively in Africa, the Americas, and Europe in search of historical materials on Africa and the African Diaspora. He has life memberships in several national and international professional and academic organizations, including founding life member of the African Studies Association of Africa in 2015; historian for the National Alumni Association of Bethune-Cookman University; the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, among others. He is a member and former President of the United Nations Association of the United States of America (UNA-USA) Gainesville, Florida Chapter; Founding President of Alachua County African & African American Historical Society, Inc., appointed member of the Alachua County Historical Commission. Dr. Gordon is married to Dr. Barbara McDade, Professor Emerita, University of Florida. They share six adult children (Jacob Jr., Jason Oyowe, Jevon Timeyin, Edythe Atiomatse, Ayann Nkenge, and Amon Okpara); and three grandchildren (Mikaela, Jhabari, and Sophia). | |||||||||||||||||
